Blaming Young UK Optometrists for Dropping Locum Rates Has To Stop!
In recent discussions, there's been a tendency to blame younger locum optometrists for the decline in locum rates. This perspective is not only lazy but also incorrect. The reality is that there are four significant factors influencing these rates, and pointing fingers at each other only diverts attention from the core issues.
Understanding the Real Reasons Behind Locum Rate Changes
1️⃣ The NHS & The GOS Fee 🏥💰
A common misconception exists regarding the relationship between locums and the NHS. Contrary to popular belief, we are not directly paid by the NHS, which would classify us as contractors. Instead, the store acts as the contractor, negotiating and determining our pay as locums.
The NHS provides minimal reimbursement for eye tests, compelling stores to depend heavily on glasses sales for financial sustainability.
💡 The Key Insight:
The GOS fee serves as the foundational revenue that enables a store to function, encompassing the locum rate within it.
The Opportunity for Change:
An increase in the GOS fee could naturally lead to higher locum rates. However, this requires action on our part. Locums must unite and actively negotiate for improved rates and conditions. After all, our services are the reason stores can claim the GOS fee initially. If we fail to take initiative, we have no one to blame but ourselves.
