Tips & Tricks About Studying For The OSCE As An Optometrist In The UK

The Truth About OSCE Success: Avoid These Common Mistakes

Everyone thinks that studying more hours guarantees OSCE success: They're wrong. Here are the five common mistakes that instantly sink candidates who are otherwise prepared. Don't let this be you!

1. You Work Hard, Not Smart

It's not what you practice, it's HOW you practice. You must practice speaking out the scenarios and notes! If you don't practice this beforehand, you will feel uncomfortable when you are forced to do what it is we do in the OSCE: speaking out the scenarios. Grab your friends, grab some tea, and get on it.

2. Ignoring the Layman's Summary/Px Information Section

The College layman’s summary is critical. If you can learn that guide, you are already 50% of the way toward passing the exam.

3. Skipping Rare Clinical Techniques

Failing to practice specific clinical techniques is a major pitfall. Maddox rod came up for me, don't be caught out like I did! Thankfully, I passed the first time, but I flopped that station...

4. Revising What You Already Know

The most efficient revision is dedicated to the stuff that you don't know. You must avoid the mistake of reading over what you already know: skip it and make a tally of what you don't know. Keep beating that down until you're 80% correct and 20% to work on, and then you're golden.

5. Using the Wrong Tools

Guys... Screw using ChatGPT! Use Notebook LM, put all the College of Optometrist resources and your own notes, and watch the magic happen as you use it.

Avoid these pitfalls, and you'll be on your way to OSCE success!
